The Darien Lions Club collects used eyeglasses, sunglasses, lenses, used hearing aids, and keys that are then passed on to the Lions of Illinois Foundation.  The used eyeglasses, sun glasses and hearing aids are then sorted, inspected, the prescriptions identified, and packaged to be shipped out of the country to third-world countries where they are distributed to needy children and adults to help improve their vision or hearing and their quality of life.  The keys are converted into cash via a recycler to help cover the cost of distribution of the eyeglasses and hearing aids.

Our main collection box is in front of Jewel Foods on 75th and Cass Ave.  We also have 15 collection points at other large retailers such as Meier's, Costco, and Sam's Club in Woodridge as well as Oxford Bank in Westmont, and Wal-Mart in Darien.  Most the items listed on this page can be deposited in the collection box (for larger electronics, see below).  You can also ask any Darien Lions Club member you may know to drop off the items at the next meeting.

We also collect cell phones and ink jet cartridges.  Please note: laser and toner cartridges are not accepted.  (If the cartridge is larger than the palm of your hand, it is not an ink jet cartridge.)  These items are passed onto EcoPhones & Electronics who buy the cell phones and ink jet cartridges from us.  This income is put in our Darien Lions Foundation to grow the fund to help support our Special Needs committee and our Holiday Food Basket program.

Our recyclers will also buy small electronic items from us.  They will pay something for every:
- laptop or notebook computer (working or not);
- digital camera or digital video recorder (working or not);
- handheld game consoles (working or not); and
- Apple iPods, Microsoft Zunes, Sandisk Sansa’s, and Creative Zen MP3 Players.

Income that is generated will be put in our Darien Lions Foundation to grow the fund to help support our Special Needs committee and our Holiday Food Basket programs.   If you have any of these items to pass on please contact our Eyeglasses Committee Chairman Lion John Callan by using the email link on this page.

This past year we collected the following items:

  • 3,942 pairs of eyeglasses sent to the Lions of Illinois Foundation

  • 16 pounds of keys sent to the Lions of Illinois Foundation

  • 235 cell phones sold for recycling

  • 742 ink jet cartridges sold for recycling

  • 31 hearing aids sent to Lions of Illinois Foundation

  • aluminum pull tabs and other miscellaneous items sent to Lions of Illinois Foundation

The Darien Lions Club Foundation received about $200 for cell phones and ink jet cartridges this past year.  We thank you for donating your used items to a very worthy cause.
